General Practice Services
We are proud to be retained advisers to a select group of businesses and private clients, to whom we provide a range of traditional accountancy and tax services. As we are a small niche firm we are in the happy position of being able to provide bespoke services tailored to the needs and expectations of each client. The “one size fits all” approach of the large firms is anathema to us. This part of our practice is important to us for its own sake – for the satisfaction that comes from providing a level of professionalism, reliability and cost effectiveness that meets or exceeds our clients’ expectations. But it is doubly important to us as it is also the bedrock on which our expert witness practice is based.
Our partners have between them over 50 years experience in acting as accountants and advisers businesses of all sizes and types of activity, from both external and internal perspectives. All John Grogan’s experience has been gained as an external adviser but a significant part of Andrea Grogan’s experience has been gained as an in house accountant with various commercial organisations.
We have particular experience of the accounting and tax affairs of firms of solicitors. John Grogan’s client portfolio has included up to three firms of solicitors, and their partners, almost continuously since he first became a partner in 1986, while, immediately before joining JGA, Andrea Grogan was employed for a number of years as financial administrator at a Legal Aid practice.
John Grogan is a chartered tax adviser as well as a chartered accountant. Andrea Grogan has acquired detailed knowledge of VAT and PAYE procedures in her previous role as in house accountant. A full understanding of the tax implications of business transactions therefore underpins all our accounts preparation work. Unlike some of our larger competitors we have never regarded it as sensible for clients’ accounts to be prepared by accountants with no tax knowledge and for business tax returns to be prepared by tax specialists with no accountancy training. We have a thorough understanding of all the tax issues likely to be faced by owner managed businesses and their proprietors, and we have well established connections with fulltime technical tax specialists in other firms who can be approached to provide second opinions in cases of special need.
Most of our personal tax clients are also directors or owners of the businesses for whom we prepare accounts. However we are also very pleased to act for any private individuals whose tax affairs are sufficiently complex for them to be uncomfortable in dealing with them without professional assistance.
We generally work on the basis of fixed fees agreed in advance so that we and our clients have certainty. Our objective is to be cost effective and to provide our clients with value for money, consistent with achieving reasonable rewards for ourselves as professional advisers. Our background is in a large national practice but we are now delighted to be a small firm with a flat structure and low overheads. We therefore believe that we offer a city centre service at suburban prices.
We do not carry out audits and, when acting for firms of solicitors, we do not carry out the inspection of the client money records required by the Solicitors Accounts Rules.
For those limited company clients who are not exempt from the requirement to have their accounts audited, and for solicitors holding client money, we can recommend firms of registered auditors, who are known to us and with which we have experience of working, to deal with the technical aspects of the reporting work. In those cases clients outsource the accounts preparation and tax work to us and we liaise with the external audit firm on behalf of the client as necessary. As John Grogan spent over 20 years as an audit partner at his previous firm we have a good understanding of the audit process and the type of information required by auditors.
We do not actively seek out new accountancy and tax clients, bur the size of this part of our practice is nevertheless increasing, particularly on the basis of personal recommendations from existing clients.
We are delighted to receive enquiries from businesses or individuals who think we may be the right firm to meet their needs.
