John Grogan

John is an honours graduate of the University of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and a member of the Expert Witness Institute.

He joined the firm which is now PKF (UK) LLP straight from university as a graduate trainee in the Manchester office. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1980 and as a chartered tax advisor in 1981, passing all exams at the first attempt. He appeared 16th in the national order of merit in the results of the ICAEW intermediate exams.

After qualifying he moved up the ranks to become a partner in 1986. During this early period he gained unusually wide hands-on experience of all aspects of the business of the accountancy profession except insolvency work.

On becoming a partner in 1986 his initial role was to act as client engagement partner for a mixed portfolio of corporate and other clients, dealing with their needs for accounting, audit and tax services. He became head of audit in the Manchester office and remained in that position for eight years. He was invited to serve on the committee of partners in the PKF national firm whose responsibility was the quality control of the firm's audit work by a programme of office visits and file reviews, and remained on that committee for six years.

In about 1990 the type of work he did began to change. Out of the blue he received a number of instructions to act as an expert witness. He enjoyed the variety and challenge the work provided and the reports he produced were well received by instructing lawyers, who came back for more. During the 1990s this became an increasingly important part of his work until, in about 1999, he substantially reduced his portfolio of general practice clients to free up more time to concentrate on developing his expert witness work, although he continued to act for a small and select group of general practice clients.

Following the White -v- White case in 2000 the proportion of John’s expert witness work that came from matrimonial lawyers increased exponentially. From 2006 onwards this led to him spending increasing amounts of time in London developing a matrimonial finance practice there. As a result, a significant proportion of his work began to come from London and the South East.

John left PKF during 2009 in order to acquire the freedom to continue to develop his expert witness practice in his own style and under his own banner.

He is highly regarded for the accuracy and clarity of his expert witness reports and his gift for making complex technical matters intelligible to the layman.

John has attended trials and given evidence in Court at various levels, including the High Court in London, Manchester, Liverpool and the Isle of Man, on many occasions.

He is an active member of the of the Forensic and Valuations Special Interest Groups of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

His role in JGA is to head our expert witness practice and to act as relationship partner for a number of our key general practice clients. He is also responsible for the delivery of our CPD training courses for lawyers.
