You may have reached this page because you are a solicitor who needs to select an accountant to provide expert evidence in a particular ongoing matter.
You will therefore wish to be sure that the expert you instruct:
- has the right credentials
- will be available at the appropriate time
- will act for a fee which you consider fair and reasonable, and proportionate to the needs of the case
You might not have reached this page if you were not already satisfied with our credentials because you already know us, or from your reading of our Forensic Services pages and John Grogan’s profile page. You may have noted that John Grogan’s CV is available as a downloadable PDF file on his profile page, and you are of course free to share this with anyone with whom you may need to discuss the identity of the accountant to instruct, including your opponents if it is to be a joint instruction.
Suffice it to say that our credentials to act as expert witnesses are set out on our Forensic Services pages and on John Grogan’s profile page.
In the remainder of this page we will make some simple suggestions to expedite the process by which you can request, and we can provide, details of our availability and proposed fees in relation to a particular matter.
Some cases are more complex than others and for cases with unusual features there is usually no substitute for a detailed discussion, either by telephone or face to face. If you feel such a discussion is necessary please contact us by whichever of the means offered on our Locations and Contact Details page is most convenient to you. However if you wish to make the first contact with us by Email please address your enquiry to quotations@jgaccountants.co.uk. We prefer new business Email enquiries to come to that address as it will be monitored continually for that purpose. However, ultimately you will receive the same response whichever channel of communication you choose.
Availability
We are often asked within what timescale we expect to be able to complete and issue a report, or whether we will be able to undertake to complete a report by a given deadline. Our general answer to the open version of the question is that we normally expect to complete reports within four to six weeks of instructions being confirmed.
We will always do our best to carry out work at short notice when we can. It is obviously easier to do so when the piece of work in question is not large. Where it is not possible to meet a particular deadline we will tell you. Often we can suggest slight variations to a timetable which can be mutually satisfactory if the overall progress of the case is not affected.
In order to enable us to respond as helpfully as possible about our availability please provide as much information as is available. This will obviously include the court’s timetable for the production of expert evidence, if one has been set, but it is also very helpful to know the actual or estimated timing of other events, such as CMC’s (or FDR’s) and final hearings.
Fees
We are often asked to provide details of our hourly rates. We are very happy to provide them on application on a case by case basis but we do not publish them on our website. To provide you with our hourly rates by return we need only a few very general details of the type of case, whether it is publicly funded and whether the potential instruction is a joint instruction. If it is to be a joint instruction please tell us who the solicitors acting for the other party are.
We happily provide our hourly rates but in practice we almost invariably work on a fixed fee basis at least up to the production of a first report. We caution against attaching too much credence to hourly rates alone in cases where the work will in the event be done on the basis of a fixed fee quotation. We therefore much prefer to provide a fixed fee quotation at the outset. In order to do so we obviously need a little more information.
In an ancillary relief case we will be able to provide a fixed fee quotation by return if you provide us with a copy of the latest accounts of the entity to be valued and confirm the scope of the instructions.
Other types of case are less homogeneous and it is not possible to prescribe the type of information we will need to see. We can only offer to discuss this on a case by case basis at the appropriate time.
